I’ve been applying to various things, so I’ve been working on updating my portfolio. These pieces are from a series I made last year called “Emergent Behaviors.” Each piece is essentially made from multiple copies of three distinct flameworked components and rubber O rings. They each stand approximately two feet tall.
I am fascinated by the idea of “emergence” where complex systems can emerge from collections of simple agents. For example, fish schools and bird flocks are the result of emergence where individuals follow a simple set of rules that creates the complex system that is the school or flock.
In playing around with this theme, I designed a series of three simple glass components that I was able to combine following relatively simple rules to create the works in this series.
